Taiji rulers

taiji rulers 2These strange-looking things are called taiji (tai chi) rulers, not because they measure anything obviously, but probably because they keep your hands at the same spacing when you’re using them for qigong exercises.

They fit comfortably in the hands and can be held in different ways, depending on the exercise. They are excellent for gentle exercise for elderly people as well as for martial arts work, and they are very tactile.

It looks as though I shall be making quite a few of these. I’ve already sold two of the first three I made.

More of a writeup here.

  1. Hi,

I have been looking for a woodworker who can make these. I operate a Chinese martial arts school in Burbank California and teach the Tai Chi ruler classes. Would you be able to make these? I need 20 or 30 to start.

    Length, 11″
Wood: Birch, walnut and perhaps something in a lightweight version such as cedar or pine.

    Thank you!

    1. Dear Michael,
I’m so sorry I haven’t seen your message until now. For some reason I’m not getting notifications of messages – I must look at the dashboard more often! The only drawback to my doing your rulers is that I’m based in the UK, so I’d have to post them. I appreciate four months is a long time for me to get back to you, but if you haven’t found anyone else I’d be happy to do them for you. Cost is £25 each, plus P&P.
      Kind regards
